AB - Ester is a collection of graphic novels and teaching material, its most important part being a series of dramatized stories about the Jewish victims killed in the Jewish Camp at Sajmište in Belgrade (Judenlager Semlin) at the beginning of 1942. The stories focus on young victims and their families, their pre-war life, the life under the German occupation and during the Holocaust. They are based on true historical events and characters. The concept is developed by Misko Stanisic, Тerraforming, and produced in cooperation with an international team consisting of expert historians, teachers, experts for the Jewish culture and tradition, Holocaust survivors, as well as a group of illustrators from Serbia and the Netherlands. Ester was developed with the support of the ODIHR’s project ”Words into Action to Combat Antisemitism” in 2016. In 2018 created a Manual that will, in addition to school teachers, target librarians and archivists, and other potential multipliers, such as NGO activists and the local Jewish communities. It was to be developed in such way that it can serve as a guide for addressing a range of challenges and dilemmas when using graphic novels, literary texts and archival resources for teaching and learning about the Holocaust and addressing antisemitism, not only when using the educational material “Ester”, but also for other similar and fitting resources. For that reason, Terraforming summoned a team of experts that could cover these topics from various angles and using different approaches: historians, teachers, archivists, librarians and didactics experts. The 64-pages Manual consist of two parts. The first part covers a broad range of challenges and dilemmas when using graphic novel, literature and archival resources for teaching and learning about the Holocaust and addressing antisemitism. While consequently using “Ester” as an example, this first part of the Manual will also offer some practical solutions and serve as a guideline for use of any suitable graphic novel, literary texts or/and archival materials in teaching about the Holocaust and antisemitism. The second part of the Manual covers concrete practical examples of educational methodologies, workshop scenarios and types of tasks prepared for the students in the frames of the “Ester” concept. Its main purpose is to explain the basic principles behind various pedagogical methodologies and learning scenarios so that teachers can use these, and all other suggested tasks presented online on Ester.rs

AB - "The Teaching Material to Combat anti-Semitism" is developed with the aim to enable the students to recognize anti-Semitism, as well as other forms of intolerance and discrimination, and learn how to confront them. This is a teaching material about a particular form of hatred called anti-Semitism. Antisemitism is hatred of Jews based on prejudices, stereotypes and lies, directed towards individuals, the community, or institutions and symbols that are Jewish or are perceived as Jewish. Hate and bias towards Jews are very old phenomena, that is spread and perpetuated for centuries, even where there are no Jews at all, or where they are only a numerically insignificant minority. As a consequence of anti-Semitism, the Jews have been persecuted, disenfranchised, looted, exiled and killed many times throughout history. The most horrible anti-Semitic crime was the Holocaust - a genocide committed to exterminating all the Jews, which was systematically planned and executed by the German Nazis, their collaborators and helpers across Europe, during the World War II. Six million Jews were killed then.

UR - https://www.jevrejskadigitalnabiblioteka.rs/handle/123456789/1460
AB - English version of the Ready2Print exhibition "Some words about the Holocaust in Serbia"
created as a stand-alone exhibition, or a supplement with the focus on the Holocaust in occupied Serbia to Yad Vashem’s "Shoah - How Was It Humanly Possible". Ready2print is an innovative concept in museum-quality exhibitions, provided as high-resolution digital files, easy to distribute, print and display. The concept developed by Yad Vashem is now available in Serbia, too. In cooperation with the Yad Vashem International School for Holocaust Studies and Yad Vashem Museum Traveling Exhibition Department, Terraforming translated ready2print exhibition “Shoah – How Was It Humanly Possible?” for use in Serbia. The exhibition deals with major historical aspects of the European Holocaust. In addition, focusing on the Holocaust in occupied Serbia, Terraforming developed a 6-panel-set titled "Some Words About the Holocaust in Serbia" that can be used as a supplement, or as a stand-alone exhibition. "Some words about the Holocaust in Serbia" is intended to be printed, exhibited and used as an addition to the Yad Vashem’s exhibition "Shoa - How Was It Humanly Possible?", or it can be used as a separate exhibition, or a publication, or digitally (PDF). This material is not meant to give a comprehensive and thorough overview of this complex period of history, but to contribute to learning and spreading knowledge about it. It contributes to a better understanding of the common elements and processes characteristic to the persecution of the Jews all around Europe compared to the model and processes implemented in the occupied Serbia and Yugoslavia in the same or very similar way. On the other hand, this material can point to some historical experiences characteristic of the persecution of the Jews in occupied Serbia, thus contributing to distinguishing particularities of the Holocaust in occupied Serbia in the wider context of European Holocaust.

U ovoj noveli ćemo upoznati Demajove: Samuila i Ženi, njihovu decu Solomona, Isaka i Rejnu, i baku Jelenu Demajo.
AB - The graphic novel "The Family Photo" is a dramatized story based on the available documentation about the life of the Demajo family, and other historical characters. In this novel, we meet the parents Samuilo and Zeni Demajo, their children Solomon, Isak and Rejna, as well as the grandmother Jelena Demajo. Besides them, several other people are taking part in the story, such as the aunt Vojka, her daughter Vesna and Vojka’s mother Bukica Demajo; a Serbian man Bogoljub Lunginovic who is a resistance fighter and a communist, and his Jewish wife Lenka Lunginovic, whose baby daughter was saved by another Serbian family that was later recognized as a Righteous Among the Nations; the Jewish students Robert, Josko and Moni, all members of the first Serbian jazz ensemble "Micky Jazz"; a famous Jewish activist Hilda Dajc who volunteered to work in the Sajmiste camp’s hospital; the Jewish refugees from Austria which escaped the Nazis and found themselves in Belgrade during that period, and others. The fact that all these significant and interesting historical characters appear in various scenes opens possibilities for additional research tasks for students. Following the Demajo family through 11 illustrated scenes from the day aunt Vojka took the family photo at the Belgrade Fair, to the day the family found themselves at the same site again as inmates of the Nazi camp, we will learn more about their life, Jewish culture and traditions, and the pre-war Belgrade in general. Using the illustrations, historical photographs, maps, documentation and historical newspapers, teachers and students will be able to further investigate the pre-war Belgrade and the events that led to the murder of almost entire Jewish population of Belgrade during the Holocaust.

AB - "Running Shoes" is a dramatized graphic novel about the destiny of the Jews in the Banat region in Serbia. Tomislav Fišer is an eleven-year-old boy, who lives in the town of Pančevo with his family: his younger sister Sara, his mother Klara and father Leo. In the ground floor of their house, they have a family-run shop "Ofner and son". After school, Tomislav often plays with his classmates Miroslav and Johan. In the ethnically diverse region of Banat, Tomislav, Miroslav and Johan - a Jew, a Serb and a Banat Swabian (ethnic German), face no obstacles to being good friends and fans of a town’s most famous athlete Julije Bauer, a member of Yugoslav national team, sprinter and holder of the national record on 100 metres, who competed in European Athletics Championship in Italy and the Olympic Games in Berlin. There is also a little girl Agnes, who likes Tomislav secretly. Aleksandar’s favourite uncle Jovan lives in Belgrade. When Tomislav and his sister Sara go to see uncle Jovan in Belgrade, they will visit the Geca Kon’s bookshop and try well-known cacao shake in the famous cafe "Ruski car" ("The Russian Tsar"). But when Germans occupied the country, everything will change and Pančevo will turn into a place of terror and crime. Being deported from Pančevo over the Danube river together with the rest of the Jews from Banat, they end up in Belgrade again. Tomislav, Sara and the mother will find that the Geca Kon’s bookshop turned into a German bookshop "Südost" and the shop windows are covered with the placards announcing "The Grand Anti-Masonic Exhibition"... "The Running Shoes" is a story about complex moral dilemmas imposed under difficult circumstances, all this told from the perspective of a young Jewish boy Tomislav.

AB - Grafička novela "Crveni automobil" je dramatizovana priča bazirana na stvarnim istorijskim likovima i događajima, svedočanstvima, istorijskoj dokumentaciji i građi. Upoznaćemo Aleksandra Freliha, jevrejskog dečaka iz predratnog Beograda, i njegovu porodicu. Prateći glavne junake kroz 12 ilustrovanih scena, saznaćemo više o njihovom životu, jevrejskoj kulturi i tradiciji, i uopšte o Beogradu i Srbiji pre Drugog svetskog rata.

U ovoj kratkoj i jednostavnoj priči, Holandski ilustrator Gabrijel Kausbruk je kroz nekoliko crteža rađenim njemu svojevrsnim grafičkim jezikom predstavio svoju viziju predratnog Beograda i života Jevreja u Srbiji u to vreme. Očigledno, učeći o Holokaustu u Srbiji, bolje razumemo i stradanja Jevreja i drugih žrtava nacizma i u drugim zemljama u Evropi.
AB - "The Archivists and the Forgotten Boxes" is a short graphic novel which serves as an introduction to other stories from the "Ester" series. Contributing to this short and simple story a Dutch illustrator Gabriel Kousbroek presented his vision of the pre-war Belgrade and life of the Jews in Serbia during that time through illustrations drawn in his own characteristic style. Gabriel’s illustrations represent proof that the Holocaust is a universal, shared European historical experience. Gabriel learned about the Holocaust through the stories about the suffering of the Dutch Jews, as well as the personal experiences of his family. But obviously, a story about the Holocaust in Serbia is so close, familiar and understandable to a Dutch illustrator that, despite the fact that Gabriel has been to Belgrade just once, he didn’t hesitate to embark on illustrating the story. Accordingly, by learning about the Holocaust in Serbia we can achieve a better understanding of the suffering of the Jews and other victims of the Nazi terror in other countries around Europe, too. Just like the other stories in the "Ester" series, this one is based on true events, too. The archivists of the Historical Archives of Belgrade did find the "forgotten boxes", and inspired by the documentary material they found - as if they did hear the voices of the Belgrade Jews echoing in the Archive depot telling their stories for the first time after 75 years now - the Historical Archives of Belgrade started a comprehensive work of linking data and documents from various archival fonds into a unified database about the Jewish victims killed in the concentration camp at Sajmište. One of the outcomes of the enthusiasm and inspiration of the archivists is the "Ester" series, too, as the idea was born during our joint work on the project "Escalating into Holocaust". Are the archivist’s names really Jeca, Vlada and Tijana (maybe these are their names!?) it does not really matter. That what really does matter is the work of archivists and historian experts which is not only interesting and exciting but also noble and essential - for, after all, these are the people at the last line of defence, fighting never to allow the Nazis’ plan of destroying all traces of the existence of the Jews to be materialised, by doing what they can to rescue a memory of a little girl, whose name might really be Ester, from eternal oblivion.
