AB - At the Zoom Shabbat held on September 16, 2022, historian Miloš Damjanović from Kosovska Mitrovica gave a lecture on "Sephardic surnames in Yugoslav territory before the Holocaust and their geographical distribution". In this lecture, the author spoke about 248 Jewish Sephardic surnames. Certain characteristics of specific surnames, their Spanish-Romanian or Hebrew origin, i.e. their linguistic basis, are mentioned. Spanish Surnames indicated either their place of origin or their occupations or some words from Spanish everyday life. Hebrew surnames indicated individual biblical figures, Jewish tribes, or geographical areas related to ancient Israel, or even angels (mentioned in the Bible). Some of the surnames were indirectly related to the Bible and the Jewish religious heritage, some referred to temple attendants and some to specific professions mentioned in the Bible. A particular group of surnames consisted of those that originated from Arabic words and were characteristic above all for those Jews who lived in Spain during the Arab domination of Spain. In the second part, all 248 surnames are mentioned with some comments on some of them.

AB - In the territory of the satellite, Nazi creation called the Independent State of
Croatia, and since its inception in 1941 up until the very end of the Second World War 1945, the criminal Ustasha regime had actively, systematically, and brutally committed genocide against Serbs, Roma, and Jews. The mass and planned killing of Jews began soon after the declaration of independence of this puppet, Hitler-controlled state, making the Ustasha regime in Zagreb the initial actor in implementing “the final
solution to the Jewish question” - that is, the biological extermination of
Abraham’s children. This occurred even prior to the ideological and political patrons of this goal ultimately declaring it officially at a Nazi leader conference of 1942 in Wannsee. The Holocaust, which was continuously and mercilessly implemented in the territory of the Independent State of Croatia throughout its existence resulted in the deaths of over 30,000 Yugoslav Jews. Even after a full 75 years since the cessation of the manhunt against and liquidation of Jews in the Independent State of Croatia, and despite persistent and meticulous research of generations of historians, the identities of many victims remain unknown. This paper will present multiple Jewish individuals unidentified until this point, who lived to witness the creation of the Independent State of Croatia, but whose wartime fate is still undiscovered. Thus, data on these people could not be found in any of the existing records of survivors, either missing or killed. Without firm proof of the exact time when their lives ended, they cannot be reliably placed among Holocaust victims. However, the discovery of these
persons may be a good starting point for further examining their wartime fate and reliably determining whether they belong to the categories of Holocaust victims or survivors.

AB - Within the paper, statistical data shall be presented on a Jewish community in the town of Raska, for the condition in the previous year, in 1936. The data is being processed by the central body of the Jewish community in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia - the Association of Jewish Religious Communities. The data, being of interest to the Association, are related to general occurrences in the Jewish communities related to demographic, membership, municipality institutions, the religious life of a man, their schooling, professional orientation and the condition of the community budget. The document is in the possession of the author and it completely belongs to the entity of the same subjects of other Jewish religious communities of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. They all appeared from the same needs and finished at the Association address, and it processed them further on and served them for the current and future activities. The documents are an application form, with questions and free spaces left for their answers, typed on a typing
machine, in the Serbian language and Latin alphabet. There are in total of 14 questions, allocated on two sides of one paper sheet of the document. With the sender’s and receiver’s seals, there are signatures of the authorized persons in front of the sender, being guaranteed for their credibility of the offered data.

AB - This paper will present the statistical data about the Jewish community in the city placed on the Raška River in 1936 - the previous year. The information requested by the central body of the Jewish community in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia - the Federation of Jewish Religious Communities, had been thoroughly collected, duly processed and sent to the claimants in a timely manner by the management of the Jewish Religious Community of Novi Pazar. Data concerning the Federation's interests are referencing the general conditions in Jewish communities with regards to demographics, membership, municipal institutions, and religious life of its members, as well as the professional orientation and state of affairs of municipal budgets. This document is in the possession of the author of this paper and belongs to the entirety of identical items from other Jewish religious communities of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. They were all compiled for the same reason - ending up in the Federation - which had then been processed and used for current and future activities. The documents were created as a form containing questions and empty space for answers printed on a typewriter, in the Serbian language and with the Latin script. There is a total of 14 questions distributed across both sides of the one-sheet document. In addition to the seals of the sender and the recipient, it contains the signatures of persons authorized by the sender, who had guaranteed the authenticity of the data provided.

In addition to the seals of the sender and the recipient, it contains the signatures of persons authorized by the sender, who had guaranteed the authenticity of the data provided.",

AB - The size in numbers of the Sarajevo Jews was reflected in the representation of the children of Moses in the education system. On the basis of one Sarajevo school and one school year, we will provide factual data which might seem incredible to the modern-day reader. What would today be considered inconceivable for schools in Sarajevo, was at the time an ordinary circumstance. This paper has a goal of examining, analyzing and presenting the status of the Jewish female students in the mentioned school in the city on the Miljacka river in the given school year, by using statistical data. Based on the report of the State Women’s Grammar School in Sarajevo in the school year of 1934/35, the author will investigate the size in numbers and success of the Jewish students, present the results of the research, and resurrect from the darkness of oblivion the human beings who have mainly disappeared from the face of the Earth a little later - in the Holocaust.

AB - Nehemiah Schönfein, a Kosovska Mitrovica doctor between the two world wars, represented a genuine example of humanity implied by this calling. He invested his whole self into the development and offering medical assistance to the population of the wider cityscape, where he came and settled, only for the reason of providing health assistance to the endangered people. This Russian Jew, that inhabited neutral Switzerland during the First World War, met members of one Serbian delegation
that introduced him to the general circumstances in the war-torn country. Interested in giving a personal contribution to remedying health circumstances in the forgotten and remote European areas, Schönfein offered his services to his interlocutors and after the termination of the Great War, he came to Kosovo and Metohija. Taking a short stand in Priština, he settled permanently in Kosovska Mitrovica, where he performed his medical practice in a private office, but also in the service of the state. With his protestant wife and two daughters, he lived in the city located on the Ibar river up until the Nazi occupation and their “final solution to the Jewish question.” Besides his main occupation, due to which he was well-known in the wider geographical area, he was also remembered for his distance far behind death, Dr Schönfein was one of the rare industrialists in the city. One of the rare Ashkenazim in the city shared the destiny of the remaining local Jewish population of Sephardic origin. Without any exceptions, the Nazis deprived of liberty and deported via rails to Staro Sajmište all those who were captured, where they were executed in a macabre manner alongside most of the other prisoners. This is how the life of Dr Nehemiah Schönfein had tragically ended, a man who selflessly sacrificed himself to save people without any exclusivity with regard to their religious,
economic, national, or other differences. The wife and children managed to survive the war, thanks to the intervention of the Swiss diplomatic core who issued them documents proving their Aryan descent. This paper shall attempt to reconstruct the rich biography of this famous, reputable, and respected Kosovska Mitrovica citizen, whose intensity and diversity of civic activism left unforgettable traces
in the lives of his fellow citizens.

U različite jevrejske zajednice u Evropi i svetu, cionistička ideja nije prodirala jednovremeno, istom brzinom i uspehom.
AB - The
carriers of Zionism as a modern political ideology of the Jewish people, shaped and established in the late 19th century, were desperately struggling for achieving the idea of the resurrection of their political nation by obtaining support from people en masse but were equally seeking understanding from great world power centres, especially those who could crucially affect the realization of beginner ideas and current programs. In different Jewish communities in Europe and around the globe, the Zionist idea did not simultaneously penetrate by equal speed and success. The barriers for this were often already established elites and their communities who had not connected the vision of the future of the Jewish people to the newly emerging ethnocentric idea. Isolation from the given world events at the time, economic and technological backwardness of the area, a fundamental attachment to tradition and religion, conservatism of the social life, the disability of the political, cultural, and intellectual milieu, and many other factors have rendered themselves an obstacle to the free and unhindered expansion of Zionism. In the areas of Kosovo and Metohija, due to a wider socio-political identity, the native Sephardic population was resisting westernization for a long time, thereby opposing the new political spirit that had obtained control over the Jewish circles in Europe. Only with the political integration of the mentioned area into Yugoslav frameworks, and the complete emancipation that accompanied it did the opportunities create for the free choice of political thought, and independent and active political action. Indirectly, the Zionist political movement was introduced to a new, modest market. The first Zionist organizations in Kosovo and Metohija emerged upon the forming of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes; their impactful force was made up of mostly young people, whereas the organizational capacities were subjected to the umbrella organization at the national level. This paper will examine and display their establishment, activities, relations with local Jewish municipalities and regional partners, as well as cooperation with the federal Zionist centre in Yugoslavia.

AB - Intellectuals of the interwar Yugoslav society were aware of countless examples of Jewish public workers, often positioned at the very top of the literary, artistic, and scientific sphere of life. With regards to the professional level, their lives have intertwined with those of the representatives of the intellectual elite from the leading nations of the Kingdom of SCS/Yugoslavia, which helped them create mutual influence and leave a substantial and lasting mark on the overall culture of this region. Making the contribution of a lively tone and a colourful landscape in working areas, they were able to crucially shape and establish the direction for the future development of professions. Except for the influence they had over their contemporaries, their creative and artistic work has far-reaching inspired the latter generations which were fans of the written word and the brush. The status of a cult in the literary and journalistic sphere between the two world wars in Yugoslavia - was enjoyed by a prominent writer from Kosovo and Metohija - Grigorije Bozovid, for whom the mentioned period will represent the culmination of the rise and acknowledgement of his work. A constituent of Bozovid’s private and professional life were Jews whom he met in the earlier periods of his life, he contacted them in the place where he was born, in the area of Old and Southern Serbia (i.e. Stari Ras, Kosovo, Metohija, Vardarian Macedonia), in the streets of the local oriental bazaars - Mitrovica, Pristina, Skoplje and Bitolj, via Constantinople and Moscow during his studies, until the point of cooperation in capital Belgrade in his mature period of life and in the zenith of creativity. As a political activist, Grigorije managed to raise his voice in order to protect his fellow Jews. Those were insecure times of sharpened international relations in Europe, during the thirties of the XX century, in which the totalitarian Nazi regime opened up the Jewish question and used its brute force for brutal methods of solving this very question. Anti- Semitism was a traditionally negligible sized phenomenon within the Serbian people, it was never widespread. Not even the growing German pressure towards the Yugoslav authorities at the beginning of the war in Europe - resulted in significant changes in that sense. On the contrary, the chief protagonists of everyday life, among which was BoZovic as well, published a publication in which they wrote affirmatively about Jews and pointed out their pro-Jewish views. This act encouraged the domestic Jewish community, but also showed the public of the world the Serbian patriots’ disagreement with extreme forms of world views which had greatly affected most of the European population. This paper has a goal of illuminating this side of Bozovid’s engagement and heirdom, and to remind of a wide spectrum of interests and the greatness of the written legacy of this exceptionally fruitful national worker.

AB - In the newly erected state after the First World War, the Serbian people became a part of a community together with new peoples and built new interethnic experiences and relations. During the interwar period, the Serbs achieved interactive social relations not only with the traditional peoples of
the Yugoslav territories but also with ethnic elements that arrived in modest numbers from the vastness of the Euro-Asian fields. Among the numerous and diverse Russian white emigrants, which the wheel of history brought and halted on Serbian ethnic and historic territories, the atypical Russians also found themselves there. They were non-Slavic Russian minorities, such as Kalmyks, Jews and Gypsies. The Kalmyks’ history, private life and collective past in the area of Yugoslavia had only been discovered in the domestic and international historiography to a certain extent. The goal of this paper is to - at least partially - shed light and give insight into that segment of the Yugoslav and white emigrant past. The reconstruction of their lives has been done mainly through the press of the time that offers a significant amount of information and represents an important historic source for that research subject. Even though only exclusively, some members of these ethnic groups left a significant mark in Serbian culture and no matter that they did not manage to survive as a compact community, due to violent and tragic episodes in the Balkan past winds, their spatial and temporal existence was a constituent part of the peoples in the Balkans, which makes this community sufficiently interesting to be researched and is an important contribution to the ethnic and minorities studies.

Even though only exclusively, some members of these ethnic groups left a significant mark in Serbian culture and no matter that they did not manage to survive as a compact community, due to violent and tragic episodes in the Balkan past winds, their spatial and temporal existence was a constituent part of the peoples in the Balkans, which makes this community sufficiently interesting to be researched and is an important contribution to the ethnic and minorities studies.",

AB - The “Final Solution to the Jewish Question”, defined through a Nazi decision to biologically exterminate all Jews, was one of the elementary parts of the Second World War in Europe. Within the borders of the Third Reich, behind the frontlines, and on the occupied territories, the Nazi aggressors demonstrated unprecedented determination to uphold their genocidal plans. The Jewish community of then defeated the Kingdom of Yugoslavia shared the fate of the majority of European Jewry. The extreme example of the speed and efficiency of the “Final Solution” can be seen on the territory of occupied Serbia, which was among the first to be declared “Jew Free”. An integral part of the Holocaust in Serbia was the complete destruction of Jews in Kosovska Mitrovica. Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews of that area, as well as those who happened to find themselves there when occupying forces appeared, were faced with an unseen threat, as they were about to face all the segments of the Holocaust: psychological, material and biological extermination. This paper explores and describes everyday histories of Jews in Kosovska Mitrovica under Nazi occupation, breakout and resistance attempts, as well as the relationship with
other local population.

AB - The authors of this paper have set an objective to themselves, and this objective
consists out of collecting diverse and authentic testimonies and knowledge
on the suffering of the Serbian people and individuals in the notorious
death-camp of Jasenovac, as well as the presentation of this information
in a comprehensive picture. In question are the two representations
on the suffering of Serbs that are results of two witnesses' memories of those
horrible and humiliating occurrences, the Serbs' Jewish fellow sufferers
– Josip Erlih and Edvard Shajer who both had the inexplicably fortunate
circumstance to welcome the liberation from the captivity of Croatian and
Bosnian Muslims Ustasha criminals – the end of the war and mindless chaos
and establishment of peace and order, videlicet the rescue of themselves
of the inevitable brutal death of the Jasenovac death-camp by using the
method of the breach, escape, resistance and strong will for surviving and the
need for testifying on the inhuman, brutal and systematical biological destruction
of entire peoples. Testimonies, even though being a secondary source
of data by authenticity and credibility, have an enormous importance
when the history of the Holocaust comes into question as well as the elucidation
of the witnesses' personal experiences of those phenomena and
events which they witnessed, irrelevant of that being their own role or that
other actors of these occurrences were only surrounding strangers, or
people have partially known or even completely unknown witnesses. On the occasion of this paper, the readers will have an opportunity to get a greater
insight into the lives of rare Jews who survived the Second World War, and
who have seen, experienced and remembered the pain, destiny and suffering
as well as the tragic situation of Serbs, their brothers in distress. These
two Jews are Erlih and Shajer, the former inmate-prisoners in Jasenovac.
By using the comparative representation of the two varieties of the same occurrences, and their versatile analysis, the authors of this work plan to prove
the objectivity, truthfulness and credibility of the told contents which would
prove the impartiality and neutrality in the words of these two witnesses,
and by doing so the non-underestimation of the secondary historical sources
which is the lack of the primary ones may serve a lot during the valid
reconstruction of the segments from the past and give a contribution to the
concluding of the integral/wider mosaic of the historical reality.

AB - Ovaj rad pruža informacije o svakodnevnom životu i socio-ekonomskom, političkom i kulturnom stanju jevrejskih zajednica na Kosovu i Metohiji neposredno pre izbijanja Balkanskih ratova, tokom njihovog vođenja,

AB - This paper has got a purpose of investigating the position and everyday life of the Jewish population in Kosovo and Metohiјa as well as the circumstances in which this small-numbered community functioned and worked in the days of complete political and security instability, armed conflicts which took place in the wider area of Kosovo and Metohija and their escalation in the course of the NАТО intervention. This paper is also dealing with the condition in which the Jewish community found itself in Kosovo and Metohija just before the beginning of introducing the state of imminent danger and the commencement of the NATO bombing of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the participation of Jewish (Israeli) voluntary soldiers in armed formations on the Kosovo- Metohian theater of operations, the work of international Jewish humanitarian organizations concerning help-out actions and helping the refugees and other victims of war of the territory of Kosovo and Metohija as well as the destiny of the Jewish civilians of Kosovo and Metohija after signing the Kumanovo agreement and the withdrawing of regular state military forces, that is - institutions, in the days in which total anarchy ruled over Kosovo and Metohija, which includes the existence of a lawless territory, no property rights, and a non-secure environment, non-existence of institutional protection and the state of total de-sovereignty.

AB - U temelju istraživanja ovog rada jest analiza stanja i stupnja duhovnosti židovske zajednice na Kosovu i Metohiji kao i utvrđivanje uloge, značaja i razvoja religijskog života iste zajednice. Rad će posvetiti pažnju i kronološkom pregledu najznačajnijih duhovnih autoriteta Židova s ovih prostora tijekom prošlosti; međureligijskim relacijama i problematici konvertiranja rijetkih slučajeva s judazima na pretežito dominantne religije ovih područja - pravoslavlje i islam.
AB - The basis of this research is the analysis of the status and the level of spirituality of the Jewish community in Kosovo and Metohija, as well as the determination of the roles,
the significance, and the development of the religious life of the same community. The research will also pay attention to the chronological overview of the most significant spiritual
authorities of the Jews from this area during the past; the interreligious relations and the issue of converting the rare cases from Judaism to the predominant religions from this
area – Orthodoxy and Islam.
