AB - Rad analizira povezanost sustava lokalne samouprave s provedbom Holokausta. Ukazuje
Rad analizira formiranje sustava gradske vlasti u Osijeku
nakon okupacije pod silama Osovina, daje neke primjere odnosa gradskih i župskih
vlasti prema Židovima i njihovom vlasništva do i nakon istjerivanja u sabirni logor

AB - The paper analyzes the relationship between the local government and the legal execution of the Holocaust in the city of Osijek. Firstly, the logic of this relationship emerged as a result of an imperfect state administrative system, whose functioning required the employment of local clerks to implement laws and orders in the state
domain. When the Independent State of Croatia began to nationalize Jewish assets and initiate the expulsion of Jews, these officials assumed a significant responsibility. The local government, with its authority precisely over the places where Jews lived, was ready to satisfy the political interests of Ustasha authorities. Secondly, not only did the local government respond to the state’s demands, but its officials also exercised their autonomy to implement much more than was required. To promote an anti-Semitic worldview, numerous city-promulgated ordinances were enforced to restrict freedom of movement, discriminate against, and disqualify Jews as members of society. To reinforce the notion of Jews as unwanted, and in coordination with the local Ustasha and members of the German ethnic group, the city authorities imposed contributions on the city’s Jewish community. The funds thus collected were incorporated into the city’s budget and allocated to reconstruct the city’s infrastructure. We may easily conclude that, in many cases, the local government in Osijek served as a precedent setter in the enforcement of anti-Semitic laws: commissioners in Jewish businesses and orders that made wearing the Star of David armband mandatory for Jews in mid-May 1941 were, in most places in occupied Europe, a rarity, etc. The process of nationalizing Jewish assets is tightly aligned with the implementation of genocide. When the local government had finalised Aryanization, the only thing left was to commit mass murder. Osijek’s Jews had been evicted from their homes from the latter half of 1941 to the first half of 1942, after which they were deported to Auschwitz and Jasenovac. More than 92% of Osijek’s Jewish Community perished in the Holocaust.

Modernisation of the Central European periphery: S. H. Gutmann Ltd. and Našička Ltd. in the industrialisation of Slavonia

AB - "This book is the product of long-lasting research into archival records, especially of the Croatian State Archives in Osijek, relating to S. H. Gutmann Ltd. Pursuing the fate of a single company, which is inseparably intertwined with the fate of its founders and owners, it tries to reconstruct the development of lumber industry in Slavonia, a historical province of Croatia, in the period ranging from the late 1800s and early 1900s over to the end of the Second World War. The members of the Gutmann family can be considered the forerunners of the modernization process not only in Slavonia but in Croatia as a whole. They established the lumber and chemical industries and initiated activities necessary for the finalization and maintenance of products of these industries. Moreover, the Gutmann barons were among the largest landowners in Slavonia. The book manuscript emerged from two stages of research. The first stage was completed in 2007 by the defence of an MA thesis entitled “The Role of S. H. Gutmann Ltd. in the Yugoslav Interwar Industry and the Development of the Town of Belišće”. The aim of the second research stage, spanning over a five-year period - from 2012 to the end of 2017 - was to examine the archival material from the Croatian State Archives in Osijek (DAOS) related to the following institutions: S. H. Gutmann Ltd. from Belišće, the Osijek Chamber of Trades and Crafts, Association of Merchants and Industrialists of Osijek, and the Municipality of the City of Osijek. In this research phase, special attention was given to the examination of legal sources - especially the sources documenting the proceedings of the District Court in Osijek from 1934 and 1935, in the famous corruption trial later to become known as “the Našička Scandal”..." (Introduction).

Demografska kretanja Židova u kotaru Našice u 19. i početkom 20. stoljeća: (prilog za proučavanje Židova u Našicama)

AB - Autor je u radu na temelju neobjavljene arhivske građe (Matične knjige rođenih, vjenčanih i umrlih „Rabinata Orahovica“) obradio demografska kretanja Židova u kotaru Našice u vrijeme tzv. modernizacijskih procesa, tj. u 19. i početkom 20. stoljeća. Iznosi podatke o njihovoj trgovaćkoj i
obrtničkoj djelatnosti pokazavši da se Židovi u Našicama nisu u svojim djelatnostima bitno razlikovali od ostale židovske populacije u Hrvatskoj.
AB - Demographic trends as they pertain to Jews in Našice were analysed on the basis of Main Registers „Rabinata Orahovica" and of the census of the Habsburg Monarchy. Their presence was noted at the time of modernization processes that took place in Croatia in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century. Jews then started migrating into Croatia from Hungary drawn by the lesser competition of the trading capital. That was their primary impetus for settling in Croatia, i.e. for moving out of Hungary and other countries of the Habsburg , i.e. Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The size of the Jewish community in Našice in the 19th and 20th century was a direct consequence of immigration. Jewish immigration into Našice reaches its peak in 1873, when Jews in Croatia gained full political rights. However, this immigration trend gradually declined, judging by the census from 1900 and from 1910.
