AB  - The article presents discourse in the Jewish press on the question of the Yiddish and Judeo-Spanish languages and accordingly, their important roles in Ashkenazi (here precisely of so-called Westjuden) and Sephardi environments. The positive image of the languages is illustrated in the press texts from Germany and Bosnia. Taking account of different social, political, cultural and linguistic conditions of both Jewish groups, the overview aims to find similar patterns in the presence of Yiddish and Judeo-Spanish in
studied Jewish magazines.
AB  - Članak predstavlja diskurs u jevrejskoj štampi o pitanju jidiša i judeo-španskog jezika i shodno tome, njihove važne uloge u aškenaskom (ovde upravo tzv. vestjudenskom) i sefardskom okruženju. Pozitivan imidž jezika ilustruju novinski tekstovi iz Njemačke i Bosne. Uzimajući u obzir različite društvene, političke, kulturne i jezičke uslove obe jevrejske grupe, cilj pregleda je da pronađe slične obrasce o prisustvu jidiša i judeo-španskog u proučavanim jevrejskim časopisima.

AB  - The paper shows an image and functions of Yiddish and Judeo-Spanish languages among Jewish Diaspora groups - the Balkan Sephardim and the Ashkenazim (the Ostjuden group) - in the period from the beginning of the twentieth century until the outbreak of World War II. The study is based on articles from Jewish weeklies, magazines and newspapers from pre-war Bosnia and Hercegovina and from Germany/Poland. It demonstrates a double-sided attitude towards the languages. On the one hand - an image of the languages as determinants of Jewish identity. Touching on this theme, the authors of the paper also try to highlight the images of Yiddish and Judeo-Spanish as determinants in a narrower sense - of the Sephardi/Ashkenazi identity in that period. On the other hand, the paper shows a tendency to treat the languages as “corrupted” and “dying” languages, as factors slowing down the assimilation of Jewish groups and also as an obstacle for Zionist ideologies.
AB  - U radu je prikazana slika i funkcije jidiša i judeo-španskog jezika među grupama jevrejske dijaspore - balkanskim Sefardima i Aškenazima (grupa Ostjuden) - u periodu od početka dvadesetog veka do izbijanja Drugog svetskog rata. Studija je zasnovana na člancima iz jevrejskih nedeljnika, časopisa i novina iz predratne Bosne i Hercegovine i iz Nemačke/Poljske. To pokazuje dvostrani odnos prema jezicima. S jedne strane - slika o jezicima kao odrednicama jevrejskog identiteta. Dotičući se ove teme, autori rada nastoje da istaknu i slike jidiša i judeo-španskog jezika kao odrednice u užem smislu - sefardsko/aškenaskog identiteta u tom periodu. S druge strane, rad pokazuje tendenciju da se jezici tretiraju kao „pokvareni“ i „umirući“ jezici, kao faktori koji usporavaju asimilaciju jevrejskih grupa, ali i kao prepreku cionističkim ideologijama.
