AB - Posle Aprilskog rata okupacijom Banata život tamošnjih Jevreja drastično se izmenio zbog odnosa banatskih folksdojčera prema njima. Prošlo je svega 4 meseca okupacije kada su svi Jevreji Banata uz punu podršku folksdojčera internirani, deportovani u Beograd i muškarci do sredine oktobra te godine a žene do maja 1942. ubijeni. Time je Banat faktički postao prvi administrativni entitet u Evropi bez Jevreja.
AB - This paper was written relying on data from different monographs, encyclopedias, studies, periodicals and, to a lesser degree, relying on research by the author. The purpose of the paper was to integrate these different data in one paper. The settlement of Germans in the region of Banat started around the mid XVIII century when, after the Požarevac Treaty, this region came under the rule of the Vienna Court. The Court soon realized that in this region, due to the low population density of the border to the Ottoman Empire, the Monarchy was weak. It later became obvious that this region could be the crops growing region that could feed the whole state and this was one reason more to enhance settlement in Banat, predominantly by Germans, mostly from southern parts of Germany. Banat at that time was a swampy region and the rivers flooded great territories, and after through irrigation it was made suitable for settlement, the Germans became an important part of its population. Over the subsequent decades, Germans greatly contributed to the economic development of Banat and they became economically stronger. The relations between Germans and Jews were correct ones, without any major mixing, until the Nazis came to power in Germany. The Jews probably lived in this region already during the time when Banat was within the Roman Empire. This can be concluded from the sites in the vicinity, in
Solin (near Split), Duklja (near Podgorica), Stobi (near Skopje). A lot of material was found in Čelarevo (Bačka) with Jewish symbols, probably from the time of migrations of people. During the Middle Ages, the links between the Jews from Spain and Khazars went through this region. When the Austrian army, after having expelled the Turks, entered Timisoara, it found there a major Jewish community. Since the arrival of Turks in Banat during the XVI century, there were always Jews in Banat, until the time of their extinction in 1941. Gradually, the number of Jews increased, so that after the April war the number of domiciled Jews in Banat was about 7,200. In any case, the Jews lived in Banat much earlier than Germans. With the disintegration of the dual monarchy after the WWI and after Banat entered a new state, the relations between Germans and Jews remained the same as before. The situation changed significantly with the rise of Nazis to power in Germany. The umbrella organization of Germans in the newly established state was the Kulturbund, which soon became the extended arm of the Nazi state, during which German youth went to Germany to "study" and to "get qualifications", thus avoiding their military duty in the country in which they lived, and joined the SS. In Vršac, there was a spy radio-station "Nora". When Banat was occupied in April 1941, all power was taken by the local German population, and literally, as of the first day of the entry of the German army, the local German population began to humiliate, arrest, torture and rob the Jewish population. The treatment of Jews, in places populated mostly by Germans, was often horrible. Although formally under the authorities of Belgrade, the Banat Germans considered themselves practically independent of the civilian authorities of Belgrade. Banat had a greater degree of independence than, for instance, the "Independent State of Croatia". They were very proud of the fact that on 14 August all Jews from Banat were in internation camps and gradually, during the following five weeks, all were deported, with the exception of 43 Jewish women married to Christians. After the deportation, there were no more Jews in Banat, except for a small group of prisoners in Zrenjanin, and the paper provides details of this. The Banat Germans were very proud that practically on their own they carried out the internation and deportation and thus, to their joy and pride, made Banat practically the first entity in Europe that was "cleansed of Jews" (Judenrein). Thus Banat became the first entity in Europe with no more Jews, with the exception of the mentioned women. Banat was not only the part of former Yugoslavia with the greatest number of victims in this respect, but also, regretfully, the first one in occupied Europe. The property looted from the Jews at the time of their leaving Banat was divided among the local German population, who never even attempted to assist, for instance, in the reconstruction of destroyed synagogues, cemeteries or other Jewish property. In the publications published by Banat Germans and their heirs abroad, there is no mention of apology for what they had done to their Jewish neighbors before their internation and deportation. The past sixty-plus years were obviously not enough for them to admit how they had treated the Jews. The fact that there were also innocent victims among them is no excuse for their actions.

AB - Association Haver Serbia, with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, has been announcing a competition for students of primary and secondary schools in Serbia since 2017, for literary, multimedia and artistic works on the topic of the Holocaust and the culture of remembrance. The "Holocaust - Culture of Remembrance" competition was launched to stimulate students and teachers to further research and continue dealing with the topic of the Holocaust in the teaching of various subjects, by raising the level of student's knowledge about the Holocaust and developing awareness of the culture of remembrance. In the period from 2017 to 2024, 1,220 male and female students from 26 cities and 36 schools participated in the Competition. This year, 2024, the topic of the competition was "Women in the Holocaust". This topic has a wide scope, dealing with girls, women and women, and some of the narrower thematic units were: Women and girls: surviving the Holocaust; Saviors of the Jews: women who risked their lives to save the Jews; Jewish heroines in the struggles: women's struggle for justice and peace; Women's creativity during the Holocaust (artists, writers): recording war experiences through drawings, paintings, stories, novels, diaries; Women's alliance: the role of friendship and support among women during survival and rescue; Righteous among the nations; Women who work to preserve the memory of the Holocaust - then and now (women's action in education and the culture of Holocaust remembrance). The examples could also refer to the territory of Serbia. It was recommended that teachers, together with their students, research this topic and encourage students to research and creative work, which will contribute to their understanding of the role of women in the Holocaust and the role of women in remembering the Holocaust. The competition, as in previous years, included various forms of literary, artistic and multimedia creativity. Three best works were selected from each category: Literary creativity (essay, poem, story, research work, etc.); Artistic creativity (drawing, poster); Multimedia creativity (presentation, film, photography, musical/dramatic creativity in digital form). Although the competition does not have a competitive nature, the expert committee reviewed the submitted works and singled out those that stood out for their originality and reflection on the topic, taking into account the independence of the students when creating the works. As part of this Competition, on the occasion of May 10 - Holocaust Remembrance Day in Belgrade, when the last group of Jewish women and children from the camp at the Old Fairground were killed by the release of poisonous gas in the truck "Dušegupka", "One School Day in Belgrade" is organized with students who participated in the Competition.

AB - On the morning of October 7, 2023, the terrorist organisation Hamas simultaneously
assaulted civilian communities and military posts in Israel. In an unprecedented
surprise attack on southern Israel, Hamas terrorists committed unfathomable
atrocities, including sexual violence and torture. The attacks claimed the lives of more
than 1194 individuals. They left over 4834 people wounded and resulted in more than
243 being taken hostage. The October 7th massacre not only escalated the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict, heightening regional instability, but it also had global
consequences by triggering a concerning increase in antisemitism within Jewish
communities worldwide. Since the onset of the attacks, Jewish communities worldwide have witnessed a significant and alarming resurgence of antisemitic incidents. Directly linked to heightened tensions in the Middle East, antisemitism in Europe has radically changed Jewish life. Private properties, Jewish community centres, synagogues, and even Jewish cemeteries have become targets of vandalism and threats. The sense of fear has triggered a profound shift in behaviours, as Jewish individuals grapple with the
urgent need to secure their safety: to keep a low profile and avoid dangers, Jewish
people have started changing their daily routines, hiding Jewish symbols (e.g. Kippah
or Star of David), and avoiding references to Israel and the Jewish community in
public. Concurrently with the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel, Jewish students began
encountering hostility on campuses, marked by a rising number of protests supporting
Hamas terrorist activities and personal attacks on community members. The
escalating tensions on campus have created a palpable sense of discomfort within
the European Jewish student community. In the most severe instances, these tensions
have prompted students to abandon their study programmes, led Jewish student
unions to cancel events, and resulted in public harassment of Jewish students by both fellow students and members of the university staff, including professors. The incidents that occurred on campus are, arguably, a consequence of a rooted antisemitism that denies Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish State and holds the Jewish collectivity accountable for any event occurring in the Middle East. In order to monitor the situation, since October 2023, EUJS has been collecting data on antisemitic attacks that have occurred inside universities across Europe. Following the release of the initial report in November 2023, EUJS has decided to publish an updated version in January 2024, aiming to present a more comprehensive and in-depth analysis of this concerning phenomenon.

Delegates from all Jewish societies and institutions and many young people stood out among those present. From the train to the waiting room, the enthusiastic youth welcomed the guests".",

It was created in 2020 at the time of the Corona. The idea came through a conversation with my friend Yasha Bararon from Vienna. I need to create something, visually, an art album that will allow future generations of my family and children to know where they come from. My daughters Ornat Dana and Vered and our son Dado, who is in the picture and who with advice, helped me a lot in creating it. U burnim razdobljima povijesti treba žrtvovati svoj imidž i riskirati gubitak glasa svetosti.
AB - „The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing.” The conclusion that the British parliamentarian and philosopher of conservatism Edmund Burke (1729-1797) drew from his experience with terror during the French Revolution has not lost its relevance even today: pacifists, who deeply despise weapons and believe in the omnipotence of diplomacy, advocate non-violence and enable evil to triumph. Righteous, smart, and noble contemporaries do not want to sacrifice their “halo” of righteousness and shy away from any intervention if it resembles “violence”. In stormy periods of history, one must sacrifice one’s image and risk losing one’s voice of sanctity. Edward Burns also realized this. Aware that on the threshold of this new year, we are faced with the task of confronting violence and evil forces, I asked myself whether real evil – a tyrant, a repressive system – is capable of corrupting people. Do injustices and repressions affect human character and do they turn the innocent “little man” into a villain? What can be so powerful that an otherwise righteous man sees no other solution than “howling with the wolves”?

AB - On the occasion of an interesting and significant anniversary, the Jewish Digital Library (JDB) has posted three texts that represent excerpts from two issues of the Sarajevo Jewish weekly newspaper “Jevrejski Glas”, published on March 23 and 30, 1928. Namely, in March this year, 95 years have passed since the events that were mentioned and described in detail in that and other newspapers. The Zionist leader and president of the Executive Zionist Organization, Mr. Nahum Sokolov, in March 1928 visited Belgrade, Sarajevo and Zagreb. It was his official visit to the Kingdom of Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia, during which he stayed in Belgrade from March 9, in Sarajevo from March 14 and in Zagreb from March 18. The meetings he had on that occasion speak of the significance that this visit caused, primarily among the Jewish communities of the mentioned cities, but also his meetings with local city officials and especially state, political and even military representatives of the Kingdom of Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia.

Zlata Živaković-Kerže i prof. dr. sc. Darko Fischer donose tekstove vezane uz Židove diljem Hrvatske, tekst dr. sc. Zvjezdana Penava Brekalo.
AB - In this issue of Glasnik, we deal with a somewhat philosophical topic. We all sometimes wonder how meaningful our actions are and can we make a positive change? Judaism believes that every person is obliged to fulfill their tikkun olam, to contribute to the betterment of the world. We have not only freedom, but also the duty of active action where necessary, in a private and social sense. Are our actions meaningful? Certainly, and we are doing our best to contribute to the world in spheres of culture, religion, art, as well as many other areas. After the introductory column in which Prof. Ph.D. Zlata Živaković-Kerže and prof. Ph.D. Darko Fischer brings texts related to Croatian Jews, text by Ph.D. Anna Maria Gruenfelder talks about the meaning of the fight against evil, and Aron Albahari’s text about the meaning of the fight for Jewish state through the prism of the history of Zionism in these
areas. Following are two articles on the meaning of time and the meaning of visual media, and the section devoted to culture presents a review of Naida Michal-Brandl’s book written by Assoc. Ph.D. Zvezdana Penava Brekalo.

AB - Dr. David Grubi (1810-1898) is little known to the broader Serbian public, but it would not be inaccurate to say that he is completely unknown here. The same applies to the local medical community, even though Dr. Grubi occupies an important place in it, not only due to his contributions to science. The only exception of sorts could be considered his bust in Bačko Dobro Polje (ex Kis-Kér), the work of the surgeon and sculptor, academician Vladimir Jokanović. Dr. Grubi, as a physician, and perhaps not only as a physician, was talked about throughout Paris during several decades of the 19th century. Moreover, on the list of his patients were numerous eminent figures, from Victor Hugo to Honoré de Balzac, George Sand, and Alexandre Dumas fils, from Frédéric Chopin to Franz Liszt, from members of Napoleon III’s court to Queen Victoria of England. He was passionate about his profession and he gladly opened his office, mostly for the famous and wealthy daily, except Sundays. On that day, he received his impoverished fellow citizens, always charging a tariff of ten francs, but treating many of them pro bono.

AB - As part of the "Zoom Shabbat" activity, organized by the Jewish Community of Belgrade and the technical support of Raka-Rahamim Levi, on December 22, 2023, the guest and lecturer was Biljana Albahari, librarian advisor in the National Library of Serbia. The lecture refers to the collection of books in the fond of National Library of Serbia, which was donated by Samuilo Demajo in May 1941 and which, according to the Nazi decrees of that time, the library was not allowed to receive. Through the correspondence of the prewar director of the National Library with the occupation authorities, we can follow how the books were kept in the library. The presentation also deals with the photograph's origin from 1940, when Samuilo Demajo and his family were photographed in front of the German Pavilion at the Belgrade Fair. This photo is in the public domain and can be freely downloaded from the Internet, educators and even historians often use it. However, formal bibliographic data about the source or collection in which the photograph is located does not exist.

The topic of his lecture and presentation was "Jewish Heavy Metal Musicians". In an excellent lecture, M. Damjanović first explained and presented this kind of music, which is a type of "aggressive music" based on the specific strength and intensity of musical expression. Also, the musicians themselves, the form they performed, and dressed, as well as the fans who followed and listened to this music were very recognizable in their image. Jews who were members of "Heavy Metal" music groups were mostly from the USA. In the presentation, Damjanović gave information about their origins and the families they came from. Each of them was presented visually with a photo and a very rich description of their professional and private life destinies. There was talk of dozens of these Jewish musicians, many from very well-known and popular heavy metal groups.

AB - As part of the "Zoom Shabbat" activity, organized by the Jewish Community of Belgrade and the technical support of Raka-Rahamim Levi, on December 1, 2023, the guest and lecturer was Saša Brajović, art historian, full professor at the Department of Art History of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Belgrade. The lecture was about the life and artistic work of Lujo Davič. Lujo Davičo (1908-1942) was a ballet dancer, choreographer and pedagogue, anti-fascist and participant in the National Liberation Movement. His name is well known in the cultural life of Belgrade. The first and most important ballet school founded in Yugoslavia in 1948 has been named after Lujo Davičo since 1960. But his personality, life and death were unknown and not the subject of research attention. Unlike the abundance of information that can be obtained about the "Lujo Davičo" school, those about Lujo Davičo's personality are reduced to a few sentences. The scientific monograph "Lujo Davičo: fragments of life" by Saša Brajović, published by "Clio" in 2019, changed that.

AB - The "Never Forget" project of the Jewish Municipality of Čakovec is important because it represents a valuable initiative of the local community to point out the importance of remembering and educating about the Holocaust "from below." This collection, as part of the project, represents an attempt to revitalize research and debates about the Holocaust in Croatia. The collection presents the works of authors who come from very different fields, institutions and levels of education and nurture different approaches and methods. Some of the papers focus on local history research through a focus on empirical research, while others emphasize an interdisciplinary approach and theories on the problems of representation and knowledge about the Holocaust. Some of the authors in the magazine announce new publications, projects and research that have the potential to significantly enrich the field of Holocaust studies in Croatia. This booklet, as well as the "Never Forget" project, is a valuable initiative that aims to connect authors and educators and further strengthen research and education about the Holocaust as well as the memory of the Jewish community in Croatia.

Rad takođe tematizuje i pojam preživele žrtve. Nјih valјa staviti u istorijski kontekst Drugog svetskog rata, uz korišćenje istoriografskih podataka i uvida istorijske nauke.
AB - The paper deals with an important aspect of the pedagogical philosophy of the International School for Holocaust Studies ‘Yad Vashem’: placing the individual at the center of the comprehension of history. We do not speak of victims in terms of numbers but give them names and faces, read the letters from the concentration camps, the diaries, and authentic testimonies, and learn about the victims as human beings. This path differs from the previous approach to teaching, which was mainly limited to the chronology of historical, political, and military events, interspersed with occasional descriptions and brief explanations of the phenomena of mass murders and Nazi policies, accompanied by death statistics. This approach is fundamentally opposed to presenting numbers exclusively and to reducing victims to statistical data. Numbers alone cannot foster identification or empathy, which is essential when it comes to learning about the Holocaust: the educational goals in this regard can only be achieved through connecting cognitive and emotional levels of learning. The paper emphasizes the importance of reconstructing the identities, faces, and lives of the victims, which is in direct contrast to the Nazi perception of Jews, where the victim was depersonalized, dehumanized, incinerated, missing, and forgotten. It also highlights the significance of the concept of survivor victims because without the testimonies of the survivors, teaching about the Holocaust would expose students to nothing but tragedy and death. However, personal stories, portraits, and memories are just the necessary first step in the process of learning and it is not sufficient to rely solely on them. In this paper, we emphasize the importance of combining facts and data with personal stories, which, with the help of historiographical information and insights from historical science, are placed in the context of World War II. Finally, attention is drawn to the Holocaust victims belonging to other suffering groups, which also helps understand the full scope of the tragedy of World War II, as well as the dangers threatening our present and the future.
