Abstract
A new Synagogue "Bet Israel" (House of Israel) was built in Belgrade in the upper part of the town Cara Uroša Street no. 20, which was ceremoniously opened on September 8, 1908. Jakov M. Alkalaj, long-time president of the Jewish community and one of the founders of the most important institutions in the Jewish community, was the first to initiate the idea of building a synagogue in the upper part of the town. The article describes the most important events related to the construction of the synagogue, the people and donors who helped the project, as well as the grand opening of the synagogue. The cornerstone for the "Bet Israel" Synagogue was laid by King Peter on May 10, 1907, and on September 17, 1908, he attended the consecration of the new synagogue together with members of the Government.
