Iz istorije sefardske zajednice u Engleskoj
From the history of the Sephardic community in England
The first Sephardic immigrants to England were Marranos - converted Jews, who came directly from Portugal or via Amsterdam in the early seventeenth century. By the mid-seventeenth century, there was already a small settlement of these Jews in London City. They professed Christianity publicly, but secretly obeyed the precepts of their Jewish faith and met in private dwellings for prayer. From the outset, the Sephardic community in England sought to preserve the customs and rituals of their ancestors from the Iberian Peninsula and followed the Sephardic tradition in Western and Eastern Europe and America. Communities were created that maintained not only the character and traditions of Sephardic Jewry but very often Spain and Portugal themselves. Hence, Spanish and later Portuguese was retained as the language in which meetings and records were kept.
