Srpska knјiževnost kao izvor za istraživanјe i razumevanјe Holokausta: srpski i jevrejski narativ stradanјa u srpskoj knјiževnosti
Serbian literature as a source for Holocaust research and understanding: the Serbian and Jewish narrative of suffering in Serbian literature
Apstrakt
This paper is an introduction to the study, in the form of an essay, about the Serbian narrative of suffering in the Second World War embodied in the work of Branko Ćopić. This narrative, with all its characteristics, is considered in comparison with similar narratives of the great Serbian-Jewish writers Danilo Kiš, Aleksandar Tišma, and David Albahari, about the Holocaust or in connection to it. The similarities and differences between these two narratives, and in connection to certain elements of the Holocaust studies, testify to the traumatic memories of collective persecution, but also to the intermingled narratives of suffering. We consider it necessary to revive the subject within the culture of remembering the victims of the Second World War, especially today in the time of denial, distortion, and manipulation of facts regarding the Holocaust. Unlike in some other European cultures, in Serbian culture, competitive victimhood is not as present. When Serbian writers write about th...e Holocaust, they write about everyone, because starvation, as well as resistance through anti-fascist struggle, was common. The Serbian and Jewish narratives of suffering within Serbian literature are extremely fertile ground for this analysis. Thus, Serbian literature becomes an open field for Holocaust research and a source of a better understanding of the literary narrative of suffering.
