Mladoturci i Staroturci u Beogradu: spor oko zidanja nove sinagoge Bet Jisrael
Mladoturci and Staroturci in Belgrade: qurell over construction of new synagogue Beth Yisrael
The 1907 quarrel shook the Sephardic community in Belgrade, creating an atmosphere of mutual intolerance and suspicion of two opposing groups. The cause of the quarrel was the construction of a new synagogue "Beth Yisrael" on Cara Uroša Street in the place of the old one that the Nazis blew up before the end of the war. The building of the temple was in fact the reason for the dissatisfaction of the masses. All the more intense and fierce, which the former municipal administration (called the "Staroturci") did in a reckless manner. The construction of the new synagogue was entrusted to the born son of then-Mayor Haima Azriel, civil engineer Victor. In fact, it was a collision of the younger generation ("Mladoturci", by analogy with the events in Turkey at the time) with the older one, who kept running community affairs from year to year, sometimes quite "familial" as was the case here.
