The sound of silence - Jugoslovenska štampa o organizovanom iseljavanju Jevreja iz Jugoslavije u Izrael (1948-1952)
The sound of silence - the Yugoslav press on the organized migration of the Jews from Yugoslavia to Israel (1948-1952)
Abstract
The process of organized migration to Israel was the most dramatic change that the Yugoslav Jewish community had gone through after the Holocaust. Between 1948 and 1952, in five waves of mass emigration, around 7,500 Jews, almost half of the war survivors left Yugoslavia for Israel. The Jews migrated to Israel during a period extremely important for defining the Yugoslav foreign policy in the post-war world. The process of organized migration intensified in the aftermath of the conflict with the Soviet Union and the search of the Yugoslav regime for alternative diplomatic support. This paper analyses the Yugoslav press coverage of the organized emigration of the Jews to Israel. The quantitative and qualitative aspects of all questions about emigration have been analyzed respectively. The focus of the article was the approach of the press to the process of migration, regarding the specific situation of Yugoslavia after the split with the Soviet Union and consequent attempts to develop a...n independent foreign policy.
