The Stay of Yugoslav Jewish Community members in Budapest during NATO air strikes (March-June 1999): solidarity and identity
Apstrakt
Ovaj rad ima za cilj da dokumentuje tromesečni privremeni boravak preko 600 članova Zajednice jugoslovenskih Jevreja u Budimpešti (17% od ukupnog broja članstva) kao i put jednog broja članova za Izrael, u vreme uoči, tokom i kratko vreme posle napada NATO na SR Jugoslaviju.
With growing certainty of NATO air strikes on Yugoslavia in March 1999, members of the Jewish community - first youth, then women and children - started to seek refuge in Budapest. The aim of all forms of the gathering of Jews, whether seminars, clubs in local Communes, summer children camps with formal or informal education or traditional and culture and to maintain the identity of the people which still exists and develops in spite of attempts to eradicate it psychologically and physically. In accordance with these goals, a series of cultural and educational activities were organized in Budapest - first by students/teachers and then also by Jewish organizations. Members were also offered an option to go or possibly to emigrate to Israel.
