AB - As part of the "Zoom Shabbat" activity, organized by the Jewish Community of Belgrade and the technical support of Raka-Rahamim Levi, on May 26, 2023, the guest and lecturer was Davor Stipić, doctor of historical sciences, whose doctoral dissertation, and research, papers and lectures related to Jewish heritage and Jewish topics. For this presentation, he prepared and talked about the Holocaust in the film. He emphasized that the forms and genres of depicting and presenting the Holocaust in film in the last 80 years have been diverse and that the topic began to be presented even before the beginning of the Second World War and the Holocaust. He pointed out that it is one of the most widespread themes of world cinematography and that there are numerous films in which the Holocaust is not the main theme, but they contain some references, associations, and various trans-genre and trans-literary associations to the Holocaust, which he presented with examples from several films. He especially emphasized that the theme of the Holocaust in world films appears in almost all film genres, including those in which it is not expected such as films with a humorous theme. Through several specific examples from the movies, he introduced the listeners to many aspects of the presence of the Holocaust in the film.

AB - This dissertation analyzes the phenomenon of Holocaust remembrance in socialist Yugoslavia in a period from 1945 to 1991. The thesis focuses on different formats of memory: individual, social, political and cultural memory, and also on different aspects of collective historical consciousness, such as monuments, public commemorations, museums, a system of education and art including film, literature and sculpture. The main goal of the dissertation is to analyze and explain the ways and mechanisms of creating collective Holocaust memory, to mark the most prominent agents, keepers and creators of remembrance, to study their political ideology and memorial practice and, above all, to underline the role of the State and the Communist Party of Yugoslavia in this process.
Regarding that, this thesis is a contribution to the researching politics of past and ideological use and abuse of history in Yugoslav socialism, as well as the contribution to the understanding of Yugoslav authentic position in terms of international relations, Yugoslavian connections with Israel and World Jewish Congress and political attitudes of Yugoslav communist authorities toward the Jewish community and the difficult and tragic heritage of war crimes committed during the World War II. The State and the Communist party had the greatest influence on creating collective memory on the Holocaust and historical image of World War II. Through the activities of the Federation of Yugoslav War veterans (SUBNOR) Socialist Alliance of Working People of Yugoslavia (SSRNJ) and official institutions, the State and the Party shaped the generalized and blurred image of civil victimhood that became the part of national historical experience. On the other side, the greatest qualitative contribution to the affirmation of the Holocaust as the unique and original phenomenon of the 20th century was given by the Jewish community in Yugoslavia, that was, at the same time, the most important, as Jay Winter call it, agent of memory, although its’ social influence was much less intensive than the influence of the State and the Party.

Društvena percepcija „Dnevnika Ane Frank“ u jugoslovenskom socijalizmu

AB - The Diary of Anne Frank has been translated into more than 70 languages and sold more than 30.000.000 copies so far which means that it has become one of the most influential books ever. Yugoslavia was one of the first communist states in which the Diary was published, and, at the same time, one of just a few countries in the world that produced the movie based on the book. At the beginning of the 1960s Ana Frank had already become a well-known symbol of civil victimhood and suffering during the war and the Holocaust. Over the decades, the newspapers in Yugoslavia were publishing articles about different aspects of the Anne Frank phenomenon regularly, they were interested in different topics such as the post-war activity of Anna̕s father Otto Frank and his foundation, the trials against the ex-Nazi officer responsible for the arrest and deportation of Frank family, controversies about the authenticity of the Diary, but also the press occasionally took an effort to find Yugoslav citizens who believed to know personally while in concentration camp, but also those whose life story was in some parts similar to the fate of Anne Frank. Despite all the popularity that Anna Frank̕s Diary has gained, the Yugoslavian culture of remembrance has never succeeded in incorporating some similar domestic examples of victimhood into the collective historical consciousness. The main reason for this was the nature of Yugoslav politics of remembrance that was mostly dedicated to the cult of struggle, resistance, and heroism, while the civil victims were present in commemorative forms only in the form and amount in which the ideology of Revolution and Pepople̕s Liberation Struggle demanded it.

AB - This article will try to examine the phenomenon of memorial forests and their role in the creation of the Holocaust memory of the Jewish community in Yugoslavia. Our intention is to present the Yugoslav Jewish tradition of planting memorial forests and analyze its symbolical background. The Martyrs’ Forest in Israel will be used as an example of a newly-founded place of remembrance and considering that the main aim of the article is to show, in comparison with other examples, what kind of symbolical rituals were used to provide a historical context and legitimacy for new memorials.

AB - In their wish to preserve the memory of the compatriots who lost their lives in the Holocaust, the Jewish community in Yugoslavia started erecting monuments to Jewish civil victims and fallen soldiers as early as the first few post-WWII years. The Monument to the Fallen Jewish Soldiers and Victims of Fascism put up in the Sephardi cemetery in Belgrade in 1952, potent with artistic and political significance, stood out from the rest of the monuments of the period. It was dedicated to all the Jews from the Socialist Republic of Serbia who lost their lives in World War II. The purpose of this article is to analyse the competition for the design of the monument by examining the documents from the Archives of the Jewish Historical Museum in Belgrade, thus making a contribution to the research of the culture of Holocaust remembrance in the Yugoslav Socialism, but also to show artistic, social and ideological aspirations of the time when, after the Cominform schism, Yugoslavia was at political crossroads. By exploring the symbolism and aesthetic values of this work, the research presented in this paper attempts to enhance the understanding of architect Bogdan Bogdanović's early creative efforts.

AB - Under the influence of different historiographical interpretations in the late 90s in the
the professional community was actualized the idea arose in the sixties among American Jews. The idea is that a decade and a half after the end of the war was a time of the conscious and deliberate suppression of Holocaust Remembrance. In modern historiography, numerous experts from David Cesarani to Hasia Diner constantly and successfully sought to prove that the Jewish individuals and organizations since the end of the war tried not to remain silent and wanted
to speak about the horrors of Hitler’s concentration camp. An important place, especially in the socialist bloc, among those who spoke about their own suffering, almost immediately after the war, were Jews of Yugoslavia and this article deals specifically with Jewish activity from 1945 to 1955. Already in Yugoslavia in 1946 was built the first modest monuments, in 1948 was formally established the Jewish Historical Museum and collecting documentation about the suffering and memories of survivors began soon after the restoration work of the Association of Municipalities in the early post-war years. The unveiling ceremony of five monuments in five Yugoslav cities in September and October 1952 was the culmination of efforts that the genocide of the Jews never forgets. Also, it was one of the most important an initiative of memorialization of Holocaust victims at that time in Eastern Europe, due to which the Federation of Jewish Communities of Yugoslavia became one of the pioneers in the development of awareness of the Holocaust as a phenomenon in the socialist part of
Europe, at a time when in most countries of the Eastern bloc Stalin’s anti-Semitic purges were in full swing.
